The tradition of wandering around the town to buy the standard assortment of products one needs for a week is going back, as nowadays the majority of modern customers from the countries of the former Soviet Union prefer doing shopping in large supermarkets, where one can buy different types of products at once. It can be easily explained taking into account the number of first rate supermarkets that have appeared during last few years.
The Silpo supermarket network, numbering 40 stores in different cities all over the country, is a recognized leader on the market of Ukraine. Nowadays the Silpo supermarkets can be found in Kiev, Odessa, Dnepropetrovsk, Zaporozhye, Rovno, Nikolaevo, Chernovtsy, Cherkassy and many other cities. Everything began in 2001 when the Ukrainian-based group FOZZY, the tough rival of global international retailers, opened the first Silpo supermarket in Kiev. In the same year 4 more supermarkets were opened and in 2002 there were already 22 of them in different parts of Ukraine. By 2007 the company plans to build about 100 Silpo supermarkets all over Ukraine and other countries of the former Soviet Union.

The Silpo supermarkets are self-service stores with the assortment of 6,000-12,000 wares (naturally, this depends greatly on the shopping space of the particular supermarket). The average shopping space of the Silpo is about 1,200 sqare meters.
